Family Internet Safety Project
What has The Cyber Trust Family Internet Safety Project got to do with getting more people involved with Cyber Security and online safety careers?
Whilst the recent UK Online Safety Act 2023 sets out to protect children from the worst of the internet it is clear from our experiences in schools that blocking everything does not really help to make children aware of the risks they might face. That responsibility falls to families and The Cyber Trust’s Family Internet Safety Project sets out to help families keep themselves and their children safe. The project is exploring the roll of internet monitoring tools such as Google Family or Norton Family which are currently used by less that 15% of families to monitor online activity. So we can lock down, monitor and intervene or let the Online Safety Act decide what children’s experience online is.
Locking things down totally is not necessarily an ideal solution. We need to get the balance right between controlling the worst of the online world and exploring the risks that will almost certainly still remain.
Young people who have taken the step to engage with organisations such as the The Cyber Trust or Cyber Security Challenge UK are the engineers and specialist of the future and will have insights into the issues. What are your thoughts on the balance between locking down, monitoring usage or leaving it to government to deal with Internet Safety in families? Feel free to contribute through our Contact Form.
